Pataki Learns How to Budget Like a Pro
The Gotham Gazette summarizes the big four New York City newspapers' editorials on the budget proposed by Governor Pataki, the final one he will be able to send to the Legislature. In addition to cutting taxes, Pataki also aims to increase the budget. A couple of the papers have deep troubles about this and also on his priorities, including the funding that New York City schools are now entitled to based on a judicial decision.
The tax cuts are likely being hyped because Pataki sees a GOP dream in 2008 and the spending is likely due to giving off some gifts as he leaves office.
But perhaps the best jewel in his crown is the throwing away of a surplus and the failure to address New York's debts.
Spending increases? No discipline to match tax cuts? Kicking deficit and debt problems to future administrations? It sounds like he's Presidential material already!
